Spreading Warmth and Compassion

Have you ever imagined living on a roadside without a roof that too during the spine-chilling winters of India? Quite frightening obviously. Homelessness is a constant challenge which India has been facing for years.

Statistics suggest that approximately 1.8 million people in India are homeless. About 52 percent of them, which is more than half of this figure, are living in cities. The situation became grim post covid-19 outbreak. Among these homeless people are significant number of teenagers and children.

Every winter, we come to know about many death instances of homeless people, who are bound to spend nights under the open skies facing severe winters. Centre for Holistic Development, an NGO working for the welfare of homeless people, recently reported that Delhi alone reported more than 172 deaths in January and February 2022.

There have been many factors for homelessness in our country like a lack of security, financial constraints, non-availability of houses at a suitable time and location, natural disasters, violence, etc. Central and state governments have launched various housing schemes for such people and also set up several shelter homes. Still, much more needed to be done in this direction.

Understanding the plight of these people, DAF distributes blankets through its Blanket Distribution Drive. We have identified homeless people who require urgent help considering the imminent winters. Our organisation also provides good quality old clothes to these less privileged people.
